This resonates with me, as it speaks to the fact that change is inevitable no matter how hard we try to keep change at bay. On top of that, once we stop the futile attempt to keep things the same, we can learn how to flow with the inevitable changes in life, and to take charge of creating those changes we want to see.
We CAN Become the Author of our Life When WE get Into the Driver Seat.
When I moved to New York City, I chose a huge change in my life on all levels. There was now an ocean between me and everything I had ever known. A huge culture shock and a complete lack of safety threatened everything I had ever believed in. On my very first day in the big city on the way to my hotel, I crossed an intersection when a police car stopped right beside me (with screeching tires), an officer jumped out and pointed a gun down the street to stop a cab and handcuff the man inside, while I hid shivering behind my all-too-small suitcase in the middle of an intersection.
Not long after, I met with a friend of a friend who was to give me instructions on how to be “safe” in the big apple. At all times, so he told me, was I to carry a $10 bill in my pocket so that when I inevitably got mugged one day, I could just hand it over quickly so as not to risk my life. What the hell? What had I gotten myself into? What was this strange planet?
I often felt like running back home. But I stayed. Thinking back, this change stands out as the biggest generator of personal growth and transformation of my life, ever. I would not be who I am now if it had not been for what seemed like a crazy choice back then. My dream to be a professional dancer came true, I fell in love with life and living, and I met my first coach who taught me to grow a core that can’t be shaken by circumstances.
Being able to stand in your truth with real confidence is a priceless feeling. Often, we don’t know where to start to get there. In my experience, learning to embrace ourselves is the first step we all must take. It is the very base from which permanent transformation can occur with ease.
